Background of the study
Codemixing, the blending of languages within a single communicative exchange, is a prominent feature of Nigerian social media, particularly in WhatsApp group chats. In these digital spaces, users seamlessly alternate between English, indigenous languages, and pidgin, creating a dynamic linguistic repertoire that reflects cultural diversity (Okoro, 2023). This study investigates the patterns and functions of codemixing, examining how speakers use language alternation to negotiate social identity, express solidarity, and convey nuanced meanings. WhatsApp group chats, characterized by their informal and spontaneous nature, provide an ideal environment for such linguistic creativity. The research explores the factors that drive codemixing, including audience, context, and digital literacy, and assesses its impact on communication efficiency and cultural expression (Ibrahim, 2024). By documenting these practices, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of multilingualism in Nigeria and highlights the transformative role of digital communication in shaping language use (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread occurrence of codemixing in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, systematic analysis of its patterns and functions is limited. Existing studies have predominantly focused on offline codemixing, leaving a gap in understanding its digital manifestations. This gap prevents a comprehensive view of how online environments influence multilingual practices. The study aims to address this deficiency by providing an in-depth analysis of codemixing in WhatsApp chats and its implications for digital communication (Chukwu, 2024).
